POSTING GUIDELINES:

Behavior
Please make sure to argue issues, instead of personalities. Please see the Posting Etiquette and Expectations for Behavior in the Current Events and Religion & Rolitics forums for details on posting expectations. These are good guidelines for everyone and for posts in all forums on this board.

Copyrights:
Please post a summary and links to articles, rather than posting the whole article; when you post an entire article, you a) slow things down for modem users, b) take up excess space in the database, and c) potentially expose us to a copyright liability issue. Posting a brief excerpt is OK, posting 10 or 12 paragraphs is not. Please also always credit the original source with a link.

If you're going to link someone's images, it's probably a good idea to check the copyright on the image, and get permission if you need to before you use the image.

We don't mind discussion of ripping, Kaazaa, Napster, P2P, etc. Discussion is important and legally protected in America. What can get us all into trouble is illegal activity, and that includes offering or soliciting rips of commercial CDs or DVDs, or anything similar. None of us want to deal with annoying lawsuits or other legal hassles, so any posts that are illegal will be deleted, and the user will be reminded of this policy. Repeated violations will result in actions that may include banning. If you're looking for Warez, you're not going to find them here. Thank you.

Cross-posting, i.e., Spamming

Posting multiple threads about the same subject in more than one forum on the board is a form of spam, and it makes the powers that be cranky. If you're not sure where to post something, feel free to ask one of the mods/admin. You don't even have to wait to post before asking - just go ahead and make the thread (in one forum that you think "fits") and then ask... We don't want you to have to wait forever to post something. If it gets moved after the fact, no big deal.

One of the most common excuses for posting in multiple forums (or in forums like Teh Soapbox or Everything Else) is that the poster wants more people to see it. Doing that kind of thing on purpose is not appreciated. If you keep your threads in the relevant forums, they'll be easier to spot and probably won't prune off the board as quickly as in the faster-moving forums. Plus, you'll have an audience that's more likely to be interested in your thread, and will keep the responses on-topic. Of course, there's always the exception to the multiple-forum posts, but those instances are rare... And it's best to ask one of the mods/admin about it first (and wait for an answer before posting the thread).

If you do cross-post threads in multiple forums without permission, your threads might be moved, merged or deleted without notice (though we usually do write a PM explaining why we did so). If we notice that you've got a nasty habit of cross-posting - or posting in an ambiguous forum to get more attention when there's an obvious place for your thread somewhere else on the board - you may get a firm nudge or maybe a warning. If you've been particularly obnoxious about cross-posting/spamming, you might get banned from the board completely.

Multiple Accounts
"Sock-puppeting," or setting up dummy accounts just to have an undead army to back you up in a debate/flamewar/contest, is a sure way to get in trouble. Don't do it.

The only exception is if you access the site from a mobile device and require an extra account to prevent constantly adjusting board settings back and forth. In this case, please contact a moderator. You will need to make sure that it is obvious to all users that the regular and mobile accounts are owned by the same person.

NSFW:
Please remember to clearly mark posts that contain not safe for work content as NSFW in the topic's subject line. Of course, this doesn't apply to BAC, since everything in BAC should be assumed to be possibly NSFW. Your at-work or at-home-with-children fellow soapboxers will thank you.

On Topic
Please keep posts on-topic. If you'd like to start a new topic, you are free to do so. Just put it in the relevant area. Posts which are off topic may be deleted or moved without notice.

Posting Large Images

Just a note here about posting images.....

Normally posting images is not a problem; however, some of those pics are really large. We all have to keep in mind that 1) other people on the board are still using dialup, so those images will take forever to load and 2) when you remote link to someone else's site to use their image (or even to your own site), you're using up server bandwidth every time the page is loaded on someone's computer. When it comes to the larger pictures, that's eating up a lot of their bandwidth- and they just might be paying for it without knowing it.

So in the future, if you want to post an image that's particularly large, please make it a url link instead of an image link. If you're not sure how to do that, please either ask one of the mods/admin or check out how the url link was done by clicking the "quote" button that's over one of the posts where there's now a url link for an image.

Please understand that this does not mean you can't post any images in here, but please use good judgement when posting the larger pics.

Private Messages:
Any member using the private messaging feature of the board to send abusive and inflammatory messages will be warned and/or banned at the moderators' discretion.

Users who don't wish to follow these guidelines may have administrative action taken on their account at the sole discretion of the board admins and moderators. These actions may include a public or private warning, a temporary restriction or "time out" from the board, an immediate banning and deletion of the account, or any combination thereof.

By posting here, or reading any of the forums, you agree to release Teh Soapbox, the moderators and administrators, the hosts and anyone else from any liability if you get your undies in a knot over what you read there.

Everyone should also know that many of the views expressed here, do not necessarily represent the views of the moderators or admins, or the views of other posters, or our host. Comments all belong to their respective posters.

Hey gang...

We're starting to notice a lot of article postings throughout the box, so we wanted to give a quick reminder of the posting guidelines:

Thanks, in advance, for helping us out with this!

One of the most common "mod-type" PMs we send out is to simply ask that a board member resize his/her avatar or sig file image because it's too big. For future reference, here are the Official Blurbs about avatar and sig file image size.

AVATARS

Quote:
... we've decided to ask people to please limit avatar file sizes to no more than 50kb, for the sake of the dial-up users of the board. Please check your avatars, and if the file size is >50kb, please adjust them to fall under this limit.

so to summarize:

your avatar should be no larger than 140x140 pixels high/wide, by 50kb in size.

Thanks!

SIG LINE IMAGES

Quote:
Please, no banners or other large images in your sig. Buttons are ok, as long as they are 100 (wide) x 35 (high) pixels in size or smaller.
